Stalin's Wife
30 minutes, 2003
Directed by Slava Tsukerman
(special guest of RSF 2004)

In Stalin's time, life of Stalin's wife Nadezhda Alliluyev was only spoken of in a hushed whisper. Today it's still full of riddles. 30 min. long excerpts from two hour long documentary about Nadezhda's life is a collection of contradicting documents and interviews. There's something of "Rashimon" in this film - reality is uncertain and eerie. In spite of the contradictions, and probably thanks to them, the film recreates an extremely convincing picture of the era. Nadezhda Alliluyev's life appears to be a collage of rumors and legends, and this collage becomes the most realistic portrait of her and the times she was living in.

The Final Solution
10 minutes, 2003
Directed by Alexander Shnurov and Victor Olenev

Since ancient times humanity attempted to comprehend the laws of beauty by means of art. In recent history such inquiries were almost completely suppressed by the self-appointed art critics and Art Selectioners, who unwillingly created the necessity of an objective evaluation of art. In 1998 this ancient quest was finally fulfilled through the creation of the Apparatus for Measuring Beauty and Determining Healing or Harmful Energies of Works of Art. This historic breakthrough led to the Final Solution of the question on the nature of art - what art is and what art should be. This film narrates the first series of tests of the Apparatus conducted on actual humans at the Silicon Valley Institute of Art and Technology in San Jose, CA.
