Red Shift Festival is a platform for migrant filmmakers who live and create outside of the country of their origins. This selection of films breaks these defining rules established by the festival from its inception. This program is for filmmakers, who live and work in their country of their origin BUT DON'T FEEL AT HOME. The program is made up of two films -- one American and one Russian. Both films are produced by artist collectives and both reflect on the idea of revolution, protest and the optimistic notion that change is possible. Besides merely believing these ideals, subjects of both film act on them. Both films are about the beautuful failure of their attempts. One story is told as a documentary essay, the other as a Jean Luc Godard homage. First in the program is “Protest Match” a film by Dmitri Vilenski (art collective "What Is To Be Done?") based in St.-Petersburg, Russia. Made during the 2006 G-8 summit in St-Petersburg, the film is an essay on a failed political protest. Second is L'eau De Vie Un Film De Jean Luc Godard, a period piece set somewhere between May 68 and contemporary gentrified Miami. This fake-scathing Marxist critique mocks the contemporary commercial art world and the notion of artistic revolution at the same time. Alexandra Lerman |
